The single-vehicle accident occurred around 2 a.m. when 61-year-old Hector Lopez of Tracy — who was driving northbound on Highway 33, just south of Spencer Road near Vernalis — swerved off the road in his 1998 Pontiac and tumbled down an embankment, according to CHP spokesman Eric Parsons.
Lopez died at the scene. He had worn a seat belt, Parsons said.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Parsons said Lopez is not suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol.
