The Patterson Joint Unified School District board accepted trustee Ruben Pina’s resignation at its Monday, June 16 meeting. Administrators presented him with a clock for his years of service.

Pina, whose resignation is effective as of June 30, began with the district in 2001 and has served as president, vice president and clerk of the board. He was in the midst of a four-year term and has moved from the Patterson area. Board members voted Monday night to first appoint a candidate to finish Pina’s term to November 2015 and then the seat would go to election.

Pina thanked the board and the school staff and administrators who worked with him for the past 13 years.

Superintendent of schools Phil Alfano first worked with Pina years ago through Migrant Education Programs before working with him on the board.

“It was a pleasure to work with him again,” Alfano said.

Over the years, Pina has seen the district grow to more than 5,000 students. He has seen changes on local campuses including the building of Creekside Middle School, Apricot Valley Elementary School and Walnut Grove School, as well as the modernization of school facilities throughout the district. He has worked under tight school budgets, seen changes in academics, and served in various board offices.

The school district will advertise for potential candidates for Pina’s board seat in the coming weeks.
