Patterson High School’s Academic Decathlon team, consisting of mostly freshman, made a good showing placing sixth out of 12th in its in competition, PHS principal Dave Stubbs announced at the April 7 school board meeting. The county decathlon was Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at Gregori High School in Modesto.

Local students who were recognized at the board meeting are Ricardo Garcia, third- place in math in scholastic category, Kenny Ong, high point winner and Matt Schaa, fourth-place gold for essay in varsity category.

Students competed by grade-point-average to place in gold, silver and bronze. Their categories are determined their GPA: Varsity 0.00 to 2.99 GPA; Scholastic 3.00 to 3.74 GPA and Honors 3.75 to 4.0 GPA.

County high school students participated in 10 areas covering math, language arts and literature, economics, essay, fine arts, speech, music, interview science and social sciences.

The event culminated with the Super Quiz held on Saturday afternoon.
