Playing in his first varsity game, sophomore Mauricio Gallardo scored three goals to help lift the Patterson High boys soccer team to a 7-0 victory against Central Catholic High of Modesto in a Western Athletic Conference clash Thursday, Oct. 24.

Patterson (15-3-1 overall, 7-3-1 WAC), sitting in third place in the league following a 4-4 tie on Oct. 22 against Ceres High, drew the Modesto-based contingent for its home finale.

"Right now, we're trying to get ready for the postseason," said Patterson coach Greg Hartsell. "We have a few things to work on, like moving the ball around the field better. We want to be our best going into playoffs."

Hartsell said he is excited about Gallardo, who moved up last week from this year's junior varsity squad.

"I've been looking forward to him joining the team," Hartsell said. "He's more than ready."

Thursday night was senior night at Patterson Community Stadium, and the nine Patterson seniors finished the match together on the pitch.

The Tiger seniors were applauded before the game: Carlos Martinez, Ricardo Alcateur, Yehia Obeid, Roberto Virgen, Alonso Ortega, Israel Sotelo, Osvaldo Barbosa, Wilver Barajas and Gilbert Arroyo.

Against Central Catholic, Barajas scored two goals, while Sotelo and Marcos Melendez tallied one goal apiece for Patterson.

The Tigers blew a three-goal lead in a 4-4 draw with host Ceres (8-2-1 WAC) on Oct. 22.

Against the Ceres Bulldogs, Andres Herrera and Sotelo each found the back of the net early to put the Tigers on top 2-0 just seven minutes into the match. Patterson added to the lead near the 27-minute mark when Herrera scored again.

But the Tigers could not hold the advantage, and settled for a tie, following a stretch in which they were outscored 4-1.

Barajas added a second-half goal for Patterson.

"If we get a lead, we have to hold it and not let it go," Hartsell said. "Our defense needs to tighten up."

Junior varsity

After starting 0-3, the JV Tigers ended the 2013 season on a five-game unbeaten streak following a 2-1 victory over the host Ceres Bulldogs on Oct. 22.

Gallardo and Roberto Rodriguez scored a goal each for Patterson (3-3-2 WAC).

"I'm proud of how we ended the season," said Patterson coach Cade Tomasegovich. "It feels good to end on a high note. I'm glad that we finished strong.
