The Patterson High varsity volleyball team recently posted a pair of victories over Western Athletic Conference foes Livingston High and Central Valley High of Ceres.

The Tigers opened with a 3-0 triumph at home against the Livingston Wolves on Oct. 16 and finished by besting the Central Valley Hawks 3-1 in Ceres on Monday, Oct. 21.

With their third consecutive win, the second-place Patterson Tigers moved to 6-2 in the conference.

Patterson coach Tarah High hopes her experienced team will be able to finish the regular season strong.

"The second round of league play has shown us that, while we are improving, we may not be progressing as quickly as we would like," High said. "The day we decide we are comfortable is the day the girls decide they don't want (to make) playoffs."

Patterson affirmed its hold on the No. 2 spot at the midway point of WAC play with a win at home against the Wolves.

The Tigers swept Livingston with scores of 25-21, 25-13, 25-20.

Mariele Schut logged five kills, while teammates Cassie Santelices and Julia Sill had eight assists apiece. Gabriella Maldonado had seven digs, and Esther Ekwueme had four blocks.

Patterson traveled to Ceres on Monday for a WAC win over Central Valley.

The Tigers prevailed in four sets, 21-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-23.

Leading the way was Mele Tupouata, who scored 11 kills and added five blocks for the night. Schut tallied nine kills, and Dayna Hansen notched 17 digs.

Sill contributed 15 assists, Maria Cortez had 11 digs and Santelices added 10 assists for Patterson.

"We will (use) our close match against Central Valley as the fuel to light our fire, until we land on the court at playoffs," High said.

The Tigers will continue their season at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, when they travel to face the Ceres High Bulldogs.

Junior varsity

The JV Tigers split two league matches, winning a 2-0 feat against visiting Livingston on Oct. 16, before falling on the road against Central Valley, 2-0, on Monday, Oct. 21.

Freshmen

The freshman Tigers swept a couple of WAC matches, earning a 25-21, 25-7 victory at home against Livingston on Oct. 16, before winning in Ceres over Central Valley, 25-16, 25-21, on Monday, Oct. 21.

With its eighth straight victory, Patterson remains undefeated in league play.

Cristal Maldonado scored five consecutive points during the match against Livingston.

"The players recovered from mental errors committed in Game one, and worked well as a cohesive team unit in Game two," said Patterson coach Nancy Sill. "Team synergy is everything in volleyball, and this group of girls seems to build on it with each passing game."

On Monday, Maldonado and Samantha Dougherty led the Tigers from the service line with 12 points and nine points, respectively.

"We have our toughest matches ahead of us and will continue to work hard in practice to develop skills and refine our play," Nancy Sill said.
