Patterson High qualified three golfers for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV tournament based on their scores at the Western Athletic Conference championships on Oct. 15, at Diablo Grande's Ranch course.

Sadie Schut, Vicky Cruz and Simone Grice reached the section tournament by placing among the lowest six scores on a non-qualifying team at the WAC championship.

The trio of Patterson golfers were in the familiar surroundings of their home course for last week’s event.

Schut led Patterson's lineup with a 111, followed by Cruz with a 114 and Grice with a 117. The medalist was Caitlin Pfaff of Ceres, who shot a 91.

Chelsea Gregory fired a round of 124 for Patterson.

"I cannot say enough about the three girls that qualified," said Patterson coach Jason Oliveira. "(Schut) initially struggled beyond words but did not give up or relent in her quest to succeed. She went from shooting 70 for nine holes to shooting 111 for 18 holes -- amazing."

Patterson's contingent battled valiantly against the league’s top golfers, Oliveira said.

"(Grice) played consistently, as she was shuffled throughout our order," Oliveira said. "With the level of improvement she showed this year, all-league is a goal she should shoot for next season.

"(Cruz's) performances in big matches, especially down the stretch, were what helped keep us close in on the race to finish in the top three teams."

Patterson (6-6) finished fourth in the final WAC standings.

Tiger Sarah Sanchez's injured finger forced the three-time all-WAC selection to pull out of last week's league finals.

Sanchez, who qualified for the Division IV tournament each of the past three seasons, missed the final two dual matches of the 2013 WAC campaign with a finger injury sustained during a powder puff football game.

"She tried to play, but the pain in her finger from the torn ligament was too much, and she had to withdraw," Oliveira said. "Still, she accumulated enough league points prior to her injury to earn her a spot on the first team all-WAC squad."

Cruz came away with second team all-league honors.
