The Patterson High boys tennis team made its first appearance in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs on Monday, April 29.

But the day ended in heartbreak for the No. 2 seed Tigers, as visiting No. 3 seed Whitney High of Rocklin won two of three doubles matches to rally for a 5-4 victory.

The contest was a seesaw affair with neither team leading by more than a point at any time during the match. Tied 4-4, the match came down to No. 3 doubles, where the visitors pulled out a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

The win moves Whitney into the second round Thursday, May 2, against top-ranked Kimball High of Tracy.

The Tigers (10-2 Western Athletic Conference) won three of six singles matches in the loss against the Wildcats (6-4 Capitol Athletic Conference).

At No. 2 singles, the Tigers gained a 7-6, 7-5 win, with John Minton of Patterson defeating Romey Kang of Whitney.

Patterson’s Francisco Lagarde bested Whitney’s Henry Foote, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4 singles, and teammate Dylan Halland followed with a straight-set win over Mitchell Koerner, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.

The Tigers’ No. 2 doubles team, Daniel Cota and Damarrio Hammonds, won in two sets, 7-6, 6-1, against Jason Kim and Lucas Calabrese.

Western Athletic Conference tournament

For a second-straight year, Patterson High player Sterling Ramirez placed runner-up in boys singles section of the league tournament, hosted April 24 and Friday, April 26, at Pacheco High in Los Banos.

He earned a berth in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II event Thursday, May 2, at the Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville.

As the No. 2 seed in the WAC tournament, Ramirez faced familiar league opponents.

After cruising through a first-round match against Livingston High’s Edgar Mejia, 6-0, 6-1, Ramirez dispatched Clarke Monroe of Los Banos High in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.

Ramirez reeled off back-to-back sets to take the semifinal match against Ceres High’s Gurman Bains, 6-3, 6-1, and earned a spot in the finals opposite Julio Ochoa of Ceres, the tournament’s No. 1 seed.

Ramirez lost 1-6, 7-6, 4-6, but still moves on as one of the WAC tournament’s top two finishers.

Patterson doubles team John Minton and Dylan Halland recorded a first-round win over the No. 2 tandem from Central Valley High of Ceres 7-6, 6-2.

Minton and Halland also made short work of the Ceres Bulldogs’ No. 2 doubles team, flattening their opponents 6-1, 6-3.

But Ceres’ No. 1 doubles team proved too much in the semifinals, defeating Minton and Halland in straight sets, 2-6, 2-6.
