Retired Patterson physician Peter La Torre is among six volunteers who will be honored at the Stanislaus County Library Foundation Shining Star Awards in Salida on Saturday, April 20.

The event honoring library volunteers is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Nick W. Blom Salida Regional Library, 4835 Sisk Road, in Salida.

La Torre and the Friends of the Patterson Library staffed a table in front of the Save Mart Supermarket in town for several months last year to get the word out about Measure T campaign in Patterson. Measure T, voted on in June 2012 is a ballot measure that renewed the one-eighth-cent tax in Stanislaus County that provides the money for 87 percent of the county library’s budgets.

LaTorre facilitated the Spanish translation of the Save Stanislaus Libraries fact sheet, which was used throughout the county. He organized volunteers to phone voters and walk precincts and he coordinated the installation of “Yes on T” signs in both Patterson and Salida. The city of Patterson has traditionally had one of the highest percentage of “yes” votes for libraries, with 86.5 percent of Patterson voters supporting Measure T in June 2012.

The Stanislaus County Library Foundation awards were established in 2004 to honor individuals, businesses or organizations and Friends of the Library for their support of the county library system. Support includes volunteer efforts, advocacy, a special program or financial contribution.
