More than 35 local senior citizens gathered Thursday, March 28, to discuss whether Hammon Senior Center should continue to be run by a volunteer board or be governed by an appointed commission.

A few suggested studying the topic further before making any changes.

Senior center attendees Mary and Ken Bennett introduced the plan for a commission in mid-March, based on a Ripon senior commission — a five-member board with one alternate.

The Hammon Senior Center board is a volunteer group, and new officers were elected in January.

“The members of the commission take an oath and are appointed by the City Council and can make laws,” Mary Bennett explained to those at the center on Thursday. “The board can only make suggestions.”

The center is run by the city Department of Recreation and Community Services, which has offices in the senior building at 1033 W. Las Palmas Ave.

The senior center board does not have a mission statement or bylaws regarding length of terms of office, who elects officers and who appoints committees. If a commission took over, it would need governing rules.

Karen Kilbert, the senior board president, asked the group Thursday to write down suggestions for the board to consider.

The next senior board meeting will be at 10 a.m. April 16 at the center and is open to all seniors.

Some other suggestions seniors highlighted at last week’s meeting included having a liaison to the board if a senior has a problem at the center; creating a foundation, Friends of the Senior Center, to allow local residents to make annual donations to the center; instituting afternoon activities at the center; improving communication between the board and residents; and increasing follow-through among participants.
