“There really wasn’t a time in this match that we let down,” Tomasegovich said of the Tigers’ second Western Athletic Conference loss. “In previous games, there’s been people walking back into position or not paying attention to what’s going on. We’re starting to take care of those things.”
Patterson (6-4-3, 3-2 WAC) saw Central Catholic (5-2-3, 4-0-0) score first, when Taylor Osnaya put the ball past Patterson goalkeeper Bernice Ayala near the 23rd-minute mark.
The Raiders scored another goal with a little less than 13 minutes to play in the opening half.
Jenavieve Kisst sent a corner kick to the right cleat of Chloe Peepgrass, who with a leap and a flick of the foot sent the ball past Ayala and into the netting on the right far post.
In the 37th minute, Patterson senior Rebekah Ruiz lined up a left-corner kick that bent toward the goal, forcing the keeper to try to punch it away. But she failed, and the ball squirted in to trim the Patterson deficit to 2-1 at halftime.
Central Catholic player Lauren Nicholson dampened the Tigers’ turnaround with a goal in the 46th minute.
Near the 50th minute, Ruiz again struck a corner kick toward the near post for the Tigers, and the ball went untouched through a crowd and into the net.
Central Catholic ended up holding off the Tigers, but Tomasegovich was pleased with the team’s effort.
“We were mentally ready for this game,” Tomasegovich said. “The scoreboard may say otherwise, but I don’t think that I’ve seen any other team in the league that is better than us. A run at playoffs is still within our capabilities.”
Patterson continues the league season at home at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 28, against Pacheco High of Los Banos.
Patterson (3-1 WAC) fell to Central Catholic 7-2 on Thursday, March 21.
Julia Sill and Cinthia Cantero each scored in the losing effort.
