A 5-3 besting of Los Banos High on Thursday, March 14, followed a 4-0 defeat of Central Valley High of Ceres on March 12.
With two starters — junior Riquel Benitez and senior Karina Vallafana — suffering injuries during the Vern Gebhardt Champions Cup at Sierra High in Manteca on March 8 and 9, Patterson coach Cade Tomasegovich understands the drive his players need to improve and succeed.
“I think after the Central Valley game the team got that feeling of dominance that has eluded us this season,” Tomasegovich said. “It seems like we are finding our way.”
Patterson (4-4-3 overall, 2-1-0 WAC) had four different players score in Los Banos to secure the victory.
Senior Eli Varela netted a pair of goals and classmates Chanda Noynola, Melanie Martinez and Natalie Rios each scored one against Los Banos (0-3 WAC).
“With all the changes that have had to be made due to injuries, I cannot pinpoint areas of growth,” Tomasegovich said. “But I have to commend the players who have been moved around a lot in order to fill positions.”
In particular, the coach named junior Karissa Cruz and seniors Andrea Garcia, Rios and Martinez.
Patterson notched its first league victory of the campaign with the win over Central Valley (1-2 WAC) at Patterson Community Stadium.
Senior Claudia Barron scored two goals and contributed an assist, while Noynola and Martinez each tallied one goal. Cruz made two assists and Varela had one.
Patterson continues the league season at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at Central Catholic High (2-0 WAC) in Modesto.
