Falcon boys net first victory
Scotts Valley boys soccer team recorded its first victory of the season, 2-1, against Westmont High on Monday, Dec. 3.
Kurt Selander scored the first goal in the 20th minute after Jordan Pini dribbled the ball through midfield and fired a shot that was blocked by the keeper back into play. The Falcons took two more shots that were deflected before Selander knocked one high to the right side.
Westmont scored in the 55th minute, but in the 77th minute, Esau Barrientos beat a defender down the line and popped a left-footed kick into the net from an almost-impossible angle to give the Falcons the win. Scott’s Valley is now 1-2-1 in the preseason.
SLV girls soccer playing well
Playing a tough preseason schedule, the Cougar girls have jumped out to a 3-1-2 record. The Cougars’ only loss came Nov. 29, a 2-0 decision to Leigh High School. Senior Chelsea Schwerdtfeger is leading the team with four goals on the season. The team has one more preseason game and start league play Dec. 11 at Harbor High.
Wrestling takes over SVHS
High school wrestling teams from California, Nevada and Oregon will participate in the 26th annual Coast Classic Wrestling Tournament at Scotts Valley High School.
Seven mats will be open simultaneously, and more than 1,000 wrestlers will compete in the two-day event Dec. 14 and 15.
The tournament is Dec. 14 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Dec. 15 from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Finals start Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. on a single mat at the center of a darkened gym.
Bethany hoops look to get on track
The Bethany University men’s and women’s teams opened their conference seasons Thursday, Dec. 6, against California State University, East Bay. The Bruins host Holy Names University on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 5:30 p.m. for the women and 7:30 p.m. for the men. The women are 0-5 in nonconference play, and the men are 0-10 with their only win coming in an exhibition game that didn’t count on the record.
Comp soccer teams play well
The Thrashers, The SV/SLV Soccer Club under-11 boys competition team, took third place in Delgado League play. In its inaugural season, the team took third place in the Delgado League during the regular season. The team tied for second place in the District Cup postseason tournament. The Thrashers missed going to the title game by one goal.
Last weekend, the Thunder, the SV/SLV Soccer Club under-10 boys competition team, finished tied for first in the prestigious District Cup tournament with three wins and a loss. Based on their record, the Thunder finished tied with Real Salinas Madrid.
