Pie bakers take home first-place prize When Yvonne Reynolds read the announcement about a pie baking contest in the Stanislaus County 4-H Forecast newsletter, little did she know that her children would take home the top prize of $100.
The Reynolds siblings, Matthew, 14, and Kelsey, 8, baked a pumpkin pie for the Monday contest at Dubyak Family Chiropractic in Turlock. The United Samaritan Foundation Daily Bread Project in Turlock donated the 142 pies entered in the contest to give the hungry Thanksgiving dessert.
“Every entrant feeds 16 hungry people,” Yvonne Reynolds said. “It’s not only a financial win for my children — they were able to help someone else for Thanksgiving.”
Both Matthew and Kelsey are Vernalis 4-H members.
Kelsey plans to donate her half of the winnings to the Westside Food Pantry in Patterson. Matthew is still undecided about what he will do with his money.
