John Michelena was born June 21, 1929 in Stockton to James and Marie Michelena. He farmed with his father, uncle and brother in the Westley/Vernalis area until he met and married the love of his life, Margaret Garcia in 1956. They settled in Patterson where he began his own farming operation and started a family. He ventured into other businesses, but always came back to his passion for farming.

Mr. Michelena enjoyed watching his crops grow, going to the coffee shop with the local farmers in the mornings, watching and participating in sports especially racing and being around his family. He was proud of his French Basque heritage and truly enjoyed Basque food. John was born into eternal life Sunday, Dec.9, 2012 after an extended illness, surrounded with loving care by his family. John was a friendly, hardworking, humble, kind-hearted and easy-going man who will be remembered as an all around nice guy. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother.

Mr. Michelena is survived by his wife, Margaret and their 10 children; Margaret Garcia and husband, Manuel, of Patterson, John Michelena and his wife, Anne of Patterson, Jeffrey Michelena of Patterson, Jerald ‘Jerry’ Michelena of Patterson, Joseph Michelena and his wife, Sara, of Turlock, Magdalen “Mandy” Duque and husband Isidro “Zeke”of Chandler, Ariz., Jaymes “Jim” Michelena and his wife, Jeanene of Modesto, Maritherese “Marcy” Keller and her husband, Aaron, of Modesto, Jordan Michelena of Jacksonville, Fla. and Michelann Michelena of Patterson; 14 grandchildren, two great grandchildren and sister, Mary Rall and her husband, Erwin, of Lodi. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Mike Michelena.

A Visitation will be observed from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, followed by a recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 529 I St., in Patterson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec 15 at the church. Burial will follow at Patterson District Cemetery, 10800 Highway 33, Patterson. .

Hillview Funeral Chapel, 450 W. Las Palmas Ave., Patterson is handling the arrangements.
