Nick Walker, a Patterson native who lives in the Bay Area, took home the Best Narrative Feature award for “George Biddle, CPA” from the festival for independent filmmakers.
Walker said he was unsure how many films were submitted, but the field was narrowed down to the top three entries judged by a panel on areas of filmmaking including acting, writing, editing and cinematography.
“According to Matthew Kalamane, one of the founders and the guy who MC’d the awards ceremony, the scoring for Best Narrative Feature ended up tied,” Walker said. “So ultimately they had to come up with new criteria to serve as a tiebreaker. They decided to give the award to the film they felt told its story most cinematically — basically, the film that did the best job at simply being a proper movie. And that was ‘George Biddle, CPA.’”
The Monarch Film Festival also gave awards for documentary, short narrative, student narrative, student short, judges’ choice and audience award.
Each winner had an encore showing the last day of the festival.
“George Biddle, CPA” premiered for cast and crew only in May at the West Side Theatre in Newman.
The film follows an accountant, George Biddle, as he is led down a paper trail of challenges by a rogue IRS agent, who turns out to be Biddle’s high school math rival. The story is loosely based on the 12 labors of Hercules. “George Biddle” was shot on location on the West Side of Stanislaus County in the summer of 2011.
Walker also received an award this year for the animated feature film “Rango.” During the Visual Effects Society’s 10th annual awards in February, he was recognized for Outstanding Virtual Cinematography in an Animated Feature Film. A cinematographer uses digital media or film to create the look of a film with lighting.
Among Walker’s credits are the Dreamworks animated films “Shrek,” “Shrek 2,” “Shrek the Third,” “Shrek The Halls” and “Madagascar.” At George Lucas’ ILM, he has worked on “Rango,” “The Avengers” and “Pacific Rim,” which is scheduled to open July 12.
