Daniel Cota and Jordan Canseco were crowned individual champions as the Tigers had eight grapplers place among the top six in their weight classes .
The host team won the invitational. Bullard High of Fresno finished second, and Dinuba High was third.
After a number of strong finishes down the lineup, Patterson has a better idea of where it stands just two weeks into the new campaign, coach Lee Scoles said.
“Dos Palos is a great tournament for us, because it’s very early in our season and allows between five and seven matches per wrestler over a two-day period,” Scoles said. “The talent that competes every year at Dos Palos is competitive and gives us a clearer picture of what our strengths and weaknesses are.”
For the second straight season, Cota , a sophomore, took first place in the tournament’s 126-pound bracket, going 7-0 at the event .
Canseco, a junior, finished first in the 120-pound weight class, also with a 7-0 tournament record.
“As anticipated, the competition was very tough; however, our athletes competed very well,” Scoles said.
Several other Tigers also had big days.
Patterson senior Joey Howard (145 pounds) and freshman Jerry Arredondo (182) both finished third in their weight classes. Eloa Chadwick (170), a sophomore, and Francisco Plascencia (195), a junior, each finished fourth, and freshman Sean DeOcampo (106) was fifth in his bracket . Sophomore Dylan Christiansen (132) placed sixth in his weight bracket.
Looking forward to a season during which more than 50 athletes are expected to wrestle for the team, Scoles believes success stems from mat experience.
“If you keep getting the kids into competition and tournaments, it gives them a chance to compete and learn that it’s not the end of the world if you lose,” Scoles said. “If you get knocked down, pick yourself up. You ultimately will be successful. If we effort properly, I’m a happy man at the end of the day.”
Patterson’s JV squad also had its share of successes at the Dos Palos Invitational as eight Tiger grapplers advanced to the medal rounds.
Patterson’s Jorge Canales (126) finished first in his weight class. Tony Halcon (120), Zeke Miranda (160), Brad Gill (170) and Andrew Arroyo (195) were third in their respective weight divisions, and Keith Gordon (132) and Aiden Fredrickson (132) recorded fourth-place finishes. Jose Jaramillo (120) placed fifth.
