PHS honors fall athletes at awards banquet

Patterson High honored its standout fall athletes Monday, Nov. 19 at its Fall Athletic Awards Banquet inside the school’s cafeteria.

The banquet, which featured a number of competitors from the Patterson boys soccer, volleyball, cross-country, girls golf and girls tennis teams, honored the best male and female athletes from each sport.

The event also acknowledged several other individual accolades, noting achievements in leadership, team spirit and overall improvement.

Boys soccer coach Greg Hartsell named Kiki Gonzalez and Adrian Ramirez the team’s co-Most Valuable Players, while teammate Andres Herrera earned Outstanding Offensive Player honors. The trio of Fernando Ramos, Gonzalez and Ramirez were voted team co-captains.

The Outstanding Defensive Player of the year award went to Ramos, while Ramirez earned the Coach’s Award.

Jose Rodriguez, Gonzalez and Herrera were honored with first-team all-Western Athletic Conference spots.

Oscar Toledo, Ramirez and Ramos were selected to the conference’s second team, while Israel Sotelo and Osvaldo Barbosa each received an honorable mention.

Karina Villafana was named the volleyball team’s Outstanding Defensive Player. Mele Tupouata took home the Most Improved Player award, while teammate Mariele Schut earned the Tiger Pride Award. Bailey Boschi came away with the Hustle Award. Kiara Job and Sadie Schut were selected team co-captains.

Tupouata was selected to the all-WAC first team, while Villafana received an honorable mention.

Cross-country coach Dave Klein named Nathan Stanton and Lupe Ventura his Most Valuable Runners. Jenevy Esqueda earned the team’s Tiger Pride Award, while Antonio Venegas took home the Coach’s Award. Joey Howard, Ben Vega and Stanton were voted team co-captains.

Stanton and Vega earned first-team all-league honors.

Girls golf coach Jason Oliveira named Sarah Sanchez the team’s Most Outstanding Golfer. Dayna Hansen earned Coach’s Award honors. Veronica Benitez and Sanchez were selected team co-captains.

Sanchez also came away with first-team all-WAC accolades.

Nzuzi Mahungu was named the girls tennis team’s Most Valuable Singles Player. Teammates Britnei Murray and Avree Chairez earned Most Valuable Doubles Player honors. Jennifer Camberos was the team’s Most Improved Player. Kelby Norfleet and Victoria Paden were named the team’s co-captains.

Kelby Norfleet and her sister, Kendal Norfleet, were selected to the conference’s first team.

Junior varsity and freshmen

The Patterson High JV and freshmen fall athletics seasons were also capped off at Monday’s banquet.

Argenis Torres earned the JV boys soccer team’s MVP award. Teammate Mitchell Heramia took home the Coach’s Award. Carlos Moreno and Torres were voted team co-captains.

JV volleyball coach Judy Dodd handed Melina Villasenor the team’s Tiger Pride Award. Teammate Arelly Magallon came away with the Coach’s Award. Gabby Maldonado and Cassie Santelices were named the team’s co-captains.

Evelyn Sanchez came away with the freshman volleyball team’s Tiger Pride Award. Teammates Estafania Ramos and Rebekah Ramirez were deemed team co-captains.

Klein named Devin Burnett the JV cross country team’s Most Valuable Runner. Teammate Carlos Ponce earned the Most Improved Runner award.
