According to a release from the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department, deputies spotted 46-year-old Many Ros of Modesto and 35-year-old Michael Phan of San Jose jumping off the roof of a clothing building at 5:35 p.m. Friday at the honor farm, a medium security jail facility at 8224 W. Grayson Road in rural Modesto.
As deputies gave chase, the two jumped into the nearby San Joaquin River and began swimming to the southern bank. Phan had trouble swimming across, however, and became unconscious as he reached the other side.
Deputies called emergency personnel, and Phan was transported to a Modesto hospital. He did not receive life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover, according to the sheriff’s department.
Ros, however, remains at large after he swam to the other side and escaped.
Phan is incarcerated for possession of stolen property and violating parole, while Ros had been in custody on suspicion of drug possession. Phan was also convicted of escaping a home detention program in 2005, according to Stanislaus County Superior Court records.
