Juanzette Hunter was installed president of Soroptimist International of Patterson for a second time when the group met June 22 at the home of Coleen Sanguinetti, installing officer, in Crows Landing.
Hunter, a four-year club member, has served in many offices and committees and was president in 2009-2010.
The group, which meets at 1 p.m. three Tuesdays a month from September to June, has 14 active members and three life members. The local club was chartered in January 1955 and meets in the Patterson Library building, 46 N. Salado Ave.
“We want to continue to grow in numbers and to support our community,” Hunter said.
Some upcoming events include having a tea with the Del Puerto Health Care Center staff; taking part in the Patterson Recreation Department’s Fall Family Festival in October, partnering with the Del Puerto Health Care Center for a Women’s Health Day; sponsoring a decorated Christmas tree in the south city park and hosting an annual Christmas Luncheon open to the community.
Soroptimist means “best for women,” and the group helps in local communities and throughout the world with a special focus on women and girls. Recent events for the Patterson club include a fashion show of clothing through the years and a wine-and-cheese evening, both during the Patterson Centennial.
Money raised throughout the year goes to community needs, such as women’s health days in October and March, scholarships for local graduating seniors through Patterson Recognizing Individuals Determined to Excel and the Westside Food Pantry’s holiday season efforts.
Soroptimist International, a worldwide organization, also tackles global issues, such as offering support to women in extreme poverty in third-world counties.
Hunter invites local women who would like to make the commitment to volunteer their time and talents to help out.
“We’d really like to have some new members, some ladies to step up to the plate and come hang out with us,” Hunter said.
Other officers serving on the 2010-11 board along with Hunter are Gloria Satcher, first vice president; Elaine DeLash, second vice president; Maddy Houk, treasurer; Terri Kinnear, recording secretary; and Barbara Hartsell, corresponding secretary. Joel Covolo is the one-year-director and Roberta Petty, two-year director. Houk is one year-delegate and has no alternate. DeLash is two-year-delegate and Hartsell is her alternate. Sanguinetti is parliamentarian, which is an appointed position.
