Scholarship opportunities from Modesto Garden Club

The Modesto Garden Club is currently accepting applications from eligible high school seniors and college students throughout Stanislaus County for six $1,500 scholarships until April 2.

The Scholarship Committee scores applicants based on employment goals, influences, education and activities relative to their career goals.

Basic must haves include a major related to the Modesto Garden Club mission, attendance at a two or four year college as an undergraduate for the 2014-15 academic year or attending high school or college within Stanislaus County.

Related majors include agronomy, agriculture education, floriculture, horticulture landscape design, botany, biology, forestry, wildlife science, plant pathology/science, city planning, habitat or forest/systems ecology, environmental concerns, environmental conservation, land management or allied subjects.

Last June, Jessica Sheetz of Patterson was awarded one of the $1,500 scholarships for her second year in a row. She is completing her studies in public horticulture and plant protection at Modesto Junior College. Sheetz plans to become a certified arborist.

The Modesto Garden Club was founded in 1924 and has more than 500 members who contribute to beautification projects, therapeutic gardening and children’s gardening activities.

The club’s first community project was landscaping the newly built Modesto Junior College campus on College Avenue.
