A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Feb. 14, for Sara Goding Smith, who died Feb. 8.

Mrs. Smith, 72, was born in Alliance, Neb., the middle child of Al and Helen Goding — Rita-al and Elene were her two older sisters and Norm, her brother and sister Joan were the two younger.

Mrs. Smith was educated at St. Agnes Academy and University of Nebraska, where she obtained her teaching credentials. Her first teaching experience was on a ranch in the Sand Hills. She also taught in Lincoln, Neb.; Page, Ariz. and in Modesto and Patterson.

Her adventurous spirit took her to Oregon where she met and married Burt Smith. They taught in Gladstone and Oregon City before moving to Page, Ariz. to teach on the Navajo Indian Reservation. They moved back to Alliance when her mother died to raise her youngest sister and work with the church ministry there.

Mrs. Smith was very involved in her church ministry and was a catechist for over 40 years. She also helped with youth ministry, marriage preparation and spiritual direction and was active in Renew, Arise and Bible studies and was also a Eucharistic Minister. Mrs. Smith was a mentor to many people she befriended. She was also active in the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority helping with the Wine and Cheese and many of their events.

Sara and her husband, Burt, have one son, Michael David, two granddaughters, Carolyn and SaraGrace. She was a devoted mother and grandmother.

Health was always an issue for Sara as she had rheumatic fever as a child and lived a life with chronic congestive heart failure, which took her life. She never let her illness stop her from living her life. She was a strong and courageous woman filled with faith and hope in her belief in her God.

A visitation will be observed from 5 to 7 p.m. with a vigil service following at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Hillview Funeral Chapel, 450 W. Las Palmas Ave., Patterson.

A Mass of Resurrection will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 529 I St., Patterson.

Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 1500 Old Mission Road, Colma.
