The Patterson High varsity baseball team fell to 1-5 in Western Athletic Conference play last week, suffering a two-game sweep at the hands of Central Catholic High of Modesto.

Patterson fell 5-1 to the Central Catholic Raiders on the road April 16 before dropping a 14-1 decision at home Thursday, April 18, in a contest shortened to five innings by the league’s 10-run mercy rule.

The Tigers (3-14 overall) managed only two hits in the two-game series with the first-place Raiders (17-3-1), who concluded the week with an 8-0 league record.

Central Catholic starter Bradley Nightengale was in command throughout Thursday’s game, striking out seven batters en route to a no-hit victory.

The Raiders got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning, recording two runs.

Central Catholic batter Tazz Rodoni led off the game with a single, went to second on a wild pitch and scored the first run on a throwing error by Patterson.

Aiden Westrope , who drew a walk off Patterson starter Andrew Basaldua, eventually scored on another wild pitch to make it 2-0.

In the top of the second inning, with runners at first and second and two outs, Westrope hit a ground ball to second base. But the ball was mishandled by Patterson’s infielder, loading the bases for Blake Escobar, who pulled a Basaldua pitch to the right-center field gap to clear the bags.

Central Catholic’s Chandler Bengston later made it a 6-0 game with an RBI single.

With one out in the top of the third inning, Trevor Bunch hit an RBI single that scored Andrew Urritia, increasing the Raiders’ lead to 7-0.

The visitors continued to increase their advantage, scoring five times in the top of the fourth.

Patterson manufactured its only run in the bottom of the frame.

Basaldua reached base safely on a fielder’s choice, went to second on a throwing error by Nightengale and scored on another defensive gaffe by Central Catholic’s shortstop.

John Mundt capped the fifth inning for Central Catholic with a towering two-run home run deep over the left-field fence.

In the first game of the series, Mundt kept the Patterson offense in check, tossing a two-hitter with four strikeouts, as he led Central Catholic to the win.

Joey Lopes led the Tigers at the plate, going 1-for-2 with an RBI single in the top of the third. Jake Thompson also tallied a single for Patterson.

Patterson continues league play on the road at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 25, against Los Banos High (12-7-1 overall, 1-5 WAC).

Patterson High’s JV baseball team (6-9, 2-4) also lost two games to the Central Catholic Raiders.

The Raiders beat the Tigers 11-10 in the opener April 16 in Modesto, and the Tigers fell at home, 7-2, in the second game Thursday, April 18.

Patterson’s Jordan Mendes finished 2-for-2 Thursday with two walks and an RBI. Teammates Thomas Turner and Kevin Phelps each added a pair of hits.

In the opening game of the series, Travis Lockhart was 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Alec Espos went 1-for-1 and drove in three runs, in addition to drawing four walks.
