Stanislaus County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about a person shot in a watermelon field near Simmons and Washington Road in the rural region between Turlock and Patterson on Sunday, July 7 at 3:05 p.m.

According to a release sent by the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department, the victim and the suspect’s wife were walking towards their cars with several co-workers after finishing their work in a field off Simmons Road when they heard a car approaching.

The car was moving at a high-speed rate. The suspect’s wife noticed that it was her husband, Eduardo Favian Maldonado, 42, driving a dark red or maroon 1999 four door Mercury Mystique towards the couple.

Maldonado, armed with an unidentified gun, began shooting at the couple, striking the victim. The wife was left unharmed, but close to being shot. The victim, currently unidentified, was transported by Medi-Flight to Memorial Hospital in Modesto, where he died of injuries at 8 a.m. Monday, July 8.

Maldonado has yet to be captured and was last seen fleeing the location of the shooting. The 1999 Mercury Mystique’s California license plate number reads 5FLX194. Authorities believe it is highly likely Maldonado may be fleeing towards Mexico, where he was originally born.

Maldonado is wanted for murder, attempted murder and attempted corporal injury on a spouse. Authorities have yet to determine why Maldonado was shooting at his wife or her co-workers. The case is currently under investigation.
