The daylong “We R 1”event took place in the downtown parks on Saturday, May 4.
The troop chose bullying as their topic of focus because one of the Girl Scouts in Troop 170 — Ariel Escobar — had been bullied to the point of wanting to end her life.
“It was a huge success, with a bigger impact than the 100 people we reached on our event day,” Angela Kraft, troop leader, said this week. “Our troop was invited to present our anti-bullying campaign at a couple of future events, and we were invited to address the council at our local City Council meeting this past Tuesday (May 7).”
Ariel Escobar addressed the crowd with a speech about her experience as part of the event during the City Council meeting. Many spectators were brought to tears. Kraft reports that the troop will soon finish paperwork for the Silver Award and will continue the anti-bullying campaign.
