“When I go out there ... I just like being out there with nature — the beaches and the mountains.” — Jaime Reyna Local artist Photographer’s work on display at library Color photos on display at the Patterson Library these days show outdoor scenes from Diablo Grande, the Merced River and Santa Cruz. Jaime Reyna’s nine digital pictures, on display in February and March, are just a few of the photos the local photographer has taken over the years. ![]() Captured scenery: Local photographer Jaime Reyna hangs up some of his latest work in the Patterson Library. Reyna started taking photos during a college class two decades ago and has progressed through wedding photography and portraits to images of nature. Photo by Elias Funez/Patterson Irrigator Reyna has photographed dozens of weddings over the years and ventured into taking portraits of graduating high school seniors by word of mouth. “I started being a wedding photographer when my sister, Maria, got married, and I’ve been doing it ever since,” Reyna said. “Since I am a wedding photographer, I enjoy making other people happy with their memories. That’s the most important thing, making people happy.” Reyna has taken several courses in the last five years at MJC, learning black-and-white and film photography and developing. Though he still shoots using film, he said the ease of digital photography allows him to enjoy his hobby without worrying about the waste of film. His passion is for portrait-type photos, but he has also learned to enjoy the more “artistic” side of landscape and still photography that is shown at the library. “When I go out there, I feel I am glad to take the picture to capture the scenery,” Reyna said. “I like just being out there with nature — the beaches and the mountains.” Librarian Kelly Thompson said she enjoys Reyna’s photos. “Mr. Reyna’s photography is colorful and serene,” Thompson said. “I’m glad to have such beautiful places — both local and distant — on display in the library.” Reyna has entered his photos in the Delicato Winery Art Show in Manteca and the Patterson Apricot Fiesta and Patterson Art and Wine Gala and has taken home a number of awards for his work. Reyna said his brother-in-law, Ben Swift, has influenced his photography. “We always critique each other’s work,” Reyna said. “We’ve gone to seminars, workshops and classes and sometimes we go out and take pictures together.” Reyna has worked at Leprino Foods in Tracy the past 20 years and is a foreman there. He and his wife, Beth, have one son, Jason. Reyna was an assistant Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 81 for 10 years and is Cubmaster for Grayson Cub Scout Pack 79. He is also Yosemite Area Council Boy Scout Commissioner. Reyna enjoys fly-fishing, riding his motorcycle and reading about American Indian history.
