OUR VOICE Just do it — get out and vote With the ongoing war, a troubled economy and myriad other issues affecting our lives these days, folks have plenty of opinions about a great many things. Sadly, relatively few people actually do something about it when they have the chance to head to the polls and vote. Nationally, voter turnout has consistently been below 60 percent since 1968. And when it’s not a presidential election year, voter turnout tends to be in the 30 percent to 40 percent range. While people in other nations have risked their lives to fight for the right to vote, many Americans have somehow been lulled into apathy. The same old excuses get recycled over and over again: “My vote doesn’t make a difference” and “Politicians are all the same anyway.” Even if the latter statement were the truth, the presidential primaries are not the only matter to be decided Tuesday. There are state propositions on American Indian gaming, term limits and community college fees and two opposing local measures that could change future development in Stanislaus County. It often holds true that the more local an issue is, the greater the impact it will have on residents’ lives. As a result, the issues that receive the least publicity — in this case, Measures E and L — often can be of the greatest importance. So, get out and take a few minutes to vote Tuesday. It’s a fundamental right and a privilege, and you can make a difference in the process. PATTERSON'S PAST 25 years ago — Feb. 3, 1983 Del Puerto Hospital directors are studying a plan that would affiliate the local hospital with Memorial Hospital in Modesto. In the meantime, Westworld Community Healthcare Inc. of Lake Forest has submitted a proposal to operate an alcohol treatment facility in the now-vacant wing of Del Puerto Hospital. Dr. Jake and Eleanor Holtzman moved out of their rural Patterson home Saturday, joining others who have been forced to flee because of rising water in the San Joaquin River. Boy Scout Chris White received his Life rank in a local ceremony. Roy Haile earned his Second Class badge, while Matt Lara and Victor Field became Tenderfoot Scouts. Patterson High wrestlers Eric Thomas, Oscar Saldivar, Matt Kuhn and Roy Martinez took first-place honors at last weekend’s nine-school tournament in Jackson. The Tigers placed a close second to the Ceres Bulldogs. 50 years ago — Jan. 30, 1958 Pat Leaf has been installed as honored queen of Job’s Daughters Bethel No. 177. Ray Morgan of Patterson is the new assistant field engineer for the city of Turlock. Gerald Bean is the new worshipful master of the Patterson Masonic Lodge, and Isabelle Rezendes has been installed president of the local American Legion Auxiliary. Richard Ray dropped in 28 points as Patterson High beat Escalon 53-34 in basketball. Boy Scouts earning honors are Ricky Germolus, Life badge; Elton Nelson, bronze palm; and Harry Hass and Charles Mears, Star rank. 75 years ago — Feb. 3, 1933 A new modern pasteurizing and milk-bottling plant recently installed at the H.R. Smith Dairy is now in operation. The plant is in a new building erected by the Ielmini brothers behind the post office. Joe Freitas has been named cubmaster of a new Cub Pack being sponsored by the Patterson 20-30 Club. At the club’s last meeting, a burlesque session was presented by past active members Harold Frame and Harold Olson. Pink eye and very muddy roads have caused Northmead School attendance to dip this week, with about 30 students out each day.
