California Highway Patrol officers will be on the watch for drunken drivers as Super Bowl Sunday approaches. The day of the football game has become a national party of sorts, and the CHP hopes drivers are aware of the dangers of drinking and driving. “Driving under the influence (DUI) is a persistent problem,” CHP Commissioner Mike Brown announced in a prepared statement this week. “It causes needless and tragic loss of life each year. Prevention is simple: Designate a sober driver and arrive alive.” Last year on Super Bowl Sunday, there were 214 alcohol-involved accidents statewide. Drinking and driving played a role in the deaths of five people on California roads that same day. In addition, CHP officers arrested 468 people for the driving under the influence last year. In an effort to keep impaired drivers off the road, the CHP is encouraging drivers to report drunk drivers and dial 9-1-1. When calling, they say people should make sure to note the location and direction the suspected drunken driver is traveling. The color, make and model of the car are also helpful, according to the CHP.
