The Patterson wrestling team squared off with a highly touted Central Catholic squad Tuesday during its homecoming match and senior night. The Tigers varsity team struggled mightily throughout the match before it fell to the visiting Raiders, 56-18. Despite prematch festivities, the evening quickly swung in favor of the seasoned Raiders, whose varsity grapplers dominated the contest from the outset. Patterson coach Lee Scoles chose to remain positive after the loss. “The intent is to look past this moment and into the future,” Scoles said. “Positive things are happening. Watching the kids wrestle tonight shows me that we are on the verge of really turning a corner.” The match itself proved to be a one-sided affair, with Central Catholic steamrolling its way to victory. “You can look at last night as just a defeat, or you can look at it as a success in terms of the amount of kids we have to put on display,” Scoles said. “After a loss, we go out and figure out a way to get better.” Patterson’s lone highlight belonged to its steadfast 152-pound grappler, Adrian Ramirez. Ramirez capped the evening off with a convincing win by pin over Central Catholic’s Cameron Ferry. “It’s real easy to take a wrestler like (Ramirez) for granted,” Scoles said. “He’s a great kid who keeps to himself, but he works hard day in and day out to get to the level that he’s at right now.” Despite the loss, spirits were high as the night kicked off with a stirring tribute to Patterson’s wrestlers and their families. The gymnasium lights were dimmed, and spectators fixated on an entrance illuminated by two strobe lights. “In The Air Tonight” by Phil Collins softly churned from the overhead speaker system as the Tigers varsity wrestlers jogged in unison, circling the center mats. Red-and-white balloons adorned the Tigers’ bench and the bleachers. Each team member was represented on the gymnasium wall by a cut-out jersey made from construction paper. Patterson’s coaching staff sported crimson-and-gray dress shirts and ties. “We are so very fortunate to have the support that we do from our families,” Scoles said. “None of this would have been possible without a collaborative effort.” (JV) Patterson 65, Central Catholic 15 The Tigers JV wrestlers used their match with Central Catholic to secure the team’s third Western Athletic Conference Championship in a row. The Tigers cruised to victory, handing the Raiders a 65-15 loss. Patterson’s Nathaniel Mayoral defeated his opponent in a grueling three-round affair. “We did really good against this team,” Mayoral said. “Since they’re Central Catholic, you’d think that they would be unstoppable. We gave them one hell of a run.” Scoles spoke about his team’s large number of JV participants. “We have more wrestlers (at the JV level) than everybody else,” he said. “They’re out working hard all of the time, and ultimately they are going to be better varsity wrestlers because of this.” To reach Marc Aceves at the Irrigator, call 892-6187 or e-mail him at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
