Tigers wrestlers pick up win at Gustine Print E-mail

GUSTINE — Patterson’s wrestlers went away with a 52-30 win Wednesday as the Tigers traveled to Gustine to face an undermanned Redskins team.

Despite jumping out to an early lead, Gustine eventually was done in by several forfeits and a tough group of Patterson grapplers. The disparity between the teams’ benches all but guaranteed a Tigers victory.

“We’re supposed to beat this team,” Patterson coach Lee Scoles said. “I don’t want to beat them just because we’ve got numbers; I want to beat them because we are a better wrestling team than they are.”

Patterson wrestler Brian Serpa, who earned a pin against his Redskins’ opponent in the 171-pound weight class, said his team is obligated to remain focused regardless of who is on the mat.

“We have to take every team seriously,” Serpa said. “Out of nowhere, any team can beat you on any given day.”

Like many of his Tigers teammates, Serpa said, last week’s difficult loss to Livingston still weighed heavily on his mind.

“Technique-wise, we’ve picked up a lot from the Livingston match,” he said. “I think everyone came out and wrestled better this week. We worked harder tonight.”

Tigers stalwart, 152-pound wrestler Adrian Ramirez, said his team was “still bouncing back from the Livingston match.”

“Some of our guys wrestled tough tonight (who) may not have had their best matches last week,” Ramirez said. “We’re still working on the things that went wrong.”

Ramirez used his match against his Gustine rival to sharpen his own skills. He eventually picked up the win by pin deep into the third round.

“I’ve been working out a little harder, trying to get myself ready for other things,” Ramirez said. “I just wanted to get my work done in all three rounds to see what I could do.”

Scoles encouraged his wrestlers not to forget the disappointment of the Livingston defeat.

“After last week, where 75 percent of the team put forth the effort to win and 25 percent didn’t, I told the team that I never wanted to see another ‘Livingston’ again,” Scoles said.

With the score well in their favor, the Tigers remained cautious of the temptation to sit back on their lead.

Scoles noted the challenges that arise from facing a Gustine team that his wrestlers are expected to defeat.

“Sometimes it’s hard to get up for a team when you know you’re going to win,” Scoles said. “For the most part, I think our kids came out and wrestled hard. It’s about building attitude now and down the road.”

The Patterson coach maintains a positive outlook for the rest of the season.

“I don’t know if it’s just my mentality or something, but I think that we should win every match,” he said.
