“This has been the plan since the beginning.” — Michelle Reimers TID representive ![]() Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator The new transmission lines, which run from the Westley substation off Needham Road to the Marshall substation south of Patterson on Marshall Road, provide some redundancy to the system that West Side residents rely on for power. Since TID started serving the West Side with power in December 2003, the company has sought to build new facilities that will reduce West Side power failures. “This has been the plan since the beginning,” TID spokeswoman Michelle Reimers said. Thursday’s activation marks the first major power system improvement this year. TID plans to have a substation on Rogers Road operating by June to provide more reliable power service. The new lines will join two other lines that allow TID to import power to the West Side. One of those lines is operated by Modesto Irrigation District. The two companies have an agreement that in case one line goes down, they can use the other company’s line. During a hot day in August last year, residents lost power after both lines broke. TID still could get power to the West Side, but only from electricity it generated by itself. The new lines greatly reduce the chance of that happening again, Reimers said. “That’s great,” Crows Landing resident Levurn Berberia said , when she heard the new lines were up and running. ![]() Activated: Turlock Irrigation District employees watch the vital signs of one of their new step-down transformers that was energized Thursday, as they work to get their second one online. Also, she said, a constant power supply has been a problem in the past. “Before, it seemed like we’d lose power all the time,” she said. While TID sees the new lines as a big improvement, the new substation will do even more to safeguard a consistent power supply. “Customers can be rerouted quicker, and a small location can be without power rather than a bigger location,” Reimers said.
