25 years ago — Jan. 27, 1983 The school district board of trustees will discuss what to do with the community swimming pool on high school property. The rundown pool has not been used for a couple of years. Three Patterson High wrestlers, Juan Gonzales, Matt Kuhn and Larry Samarripa, brought home first-place finishes as the Tigers easily took the first-place trophy in last weekend’s nine-school tournament at Amador High School. 50 years ago — Jan. 23, 1958 One of 1957’s top news stories of local interest was Patterson’s Ernie Rose being one of eight boat racers named All American by Yachting Magazine in its 50th anniversary edition. The honor for Rose came for his 1956 performance, ranking him No. 1 in his racing class with 11 first-place finishes, two seconds, a third and a fifth. Kay McDowell has been elected reporter for the Modesto Junior College Farmerettes. The new yell leaders at Las Palmas Elementary School are eighth-graders Nancy Schroeder, Julie Bettencourt and Carol Bertolosso. 75 years ago — Jan. 27, 1933 The 20-30 Club, meeting for dinner at the Emerald Hotel on El Circulo, planned a trip to the snow for next month. William Graves is chairman. Two first-run feature movies will be shown next week at the New Patterson Theatre. They are “Island of Lost Souls,” based on an H.G. Wells novel, and “Madame Butterfly,” staring Sylvia Sydney and Cary Grant. Apricots were selling this week at 27 cents for two cans at the New Witten Market. Patterson Irrigator archives.
