Patterson High’s girls basketball team proved far too strong for a beleaguered Orestimba team Tuesday.
The host Tigers cruised to a 58-20 win over the Warriors, ending a two-game losing streak and improving the girls’ overall record to 10-10.
Senior forward Michelle Bancroft led the Tiger onslaught, single-handedly outscoring the Warriors with her 21-point contribution. For the second time this season, every available Patterson player saw action and posted at least two points. Defense was the name of the game for Patterson. The girls locked up Orestimba all night, applying constant pressure and holding the Warriors to only seven field goals for the entire contest.
Our defense never let up,” Patterson coach Jason McCleery said. “We were consistent from start to finish. We never gave up any easy baskets, and Orestimba never went on any runs.”
It didn’t take long for Patterson to impose its will upon the visibly overmatched Warriors. The Tigers jumped ahead to a 13-3 first-quarter lead and controlled the tempo throughout the game. By halftime, the lead had swollen to 16, with Orestimba failing to break double digits in scoring.
Patterson’s senior guard, Shavon Furrow, chipped in with nine points of her own. She also exhibited tenacity on defense and the constant ability to keep her teammates involved when she had the ball in her hands.
“We already know the things that we have to do in order to win,” Furrow said. “It’s just a matter of us executing right and playing together.”
Orestimba scored three of its seven field goals in the third quarter. Patterson typically held the Warriors only to one shot per possession. The Tigers aggressively pulled down rebounds, anticipated sloppy Orestimba passes and swarmed toward any player wearing a blue jersey.
The third quarter ended unmercifully, with the Tigers perched atop a commanding 39-16 lead.
Bancroft owned the game’s final quarter, tallying 11 of her game-high 21 points during that period. She ended her magnificent shooting affair with a 3-pointer from the wing.
Despite the blowout final score, this win was just as much an attribute to the Tigers’ defense as it was to their offense, McCleery told his players. With nine more games left — four of those coming against league powers Livingston and Hilmar — McCleery also noted that it is crucial that the Tigers continue to build upon their strengths.
“It feels good to get this win,” Furrow said. “I can’t wait to play against Livingston and Hilmar.”
McCleery said his team’s goal is to win league.
“Our destiny is still in our own hands,” he said. “The important thing right now is to continue to get better each game.”
