Kudos to Young Writers and Girl Scouts to Sell Cookies

Young writers are honored
Six local students took home certificates this month for their entries in Patterson Unified School District’s Jack Frost writing contest. Kathy Pon, assistant superintendent of educational services, presented the certificates to the young writers at Monday’s school board meeting.

Three eighth-graders in the Independent Study program — Melissa Taylor, Shazia Mahammad and Megan Roberts — took first, second, and third place, respectively, in the secondary level of the contest.

Winners in kindergarten through fifth grade were Bryan Crisantos, a fifth-grader at Las Palmas Elementary School, first place; Kendrick R. Taylor, a fourth-grader at Northmead Elementary School, second place; and Steven Barba, a third-grader from Las Palmas, third place.

Students in the district will continue to write submissions to the Jack Frost writing contest through February and March. All writers receive certificates of participation, and their writing will be submitted in the Patterson Apricot Fiesta Prose and Poetry Review contest.

Girl Scouts will sell cookies
Local Girl Scouts will take orders for cookies through Feb. 24.

The girls also will sell cookies at outdoor “cookie shops” from Feb. 22 to March 9 in front of Save Mart Supermarkets, 1035 Sperry Ave.; Longs Drugs Stores, 1080 Sperry Ave.; True Value Hardware, 1040 W. Las Palmas Ave.; Sam’s Food City, 125 S. El Circulo; Starbucks Coffee, 15040 Rogers Road and other locations throughout Patterson and Newman.

Cookie lovers can choose from eight varieties. All varieties, including the popular Thin Mints and Caramel deLites (Samoas), now contain less than .5 grams trans fat per serving, to help address customer health concerns. The cookies cost $3.50 per box.
