HILMAR — Patterson squared off against a resilient Hilmar team Monday, falling to the host Yellowjackets, 50-44.

The Tigers had several opportunities to take the game, including a chance to even the score with a little more than 20 seconds left in the game. However, time ran out on the Tigers’ comeback — and with it a chance to pull out a big win on the road.

The late Hilmar lead was never insurmountable. Even when the Yellowjackets upped the Patterson deficit to five deep into the final minute of play, there was never a telltale sign that the game was in hand.

But the Tigers could not find their offense as several opportunities fell by the wayside. No player stepped up to take over the game, and a come-from-behind win proved to be out of the question.

“The second half, we totally got away from our game,” Patterson coach Jason McCleery said. “We took quick shots; we forced the ball. Defensively, we didn’t rebound, and we didn’t get out on their shooters.”

The first half was closely contested, and Patterson entered the second quarter with a slim 9-6 lead.
The Tigers’ Michelle Bancroft tallied up four quick points in the second period, two coming off of a fast-break layup in transition via a Brooke Borba pass. Guard Shavon Furrow followed suit, nailing two free throws and nudging the lead to 17-13. Another Furrow jumper from the free-throw line inched just over a Hilmar defender’s fingertips and gave Patterson a 19-16 lead going into the break.

“The first half, we controlled the ball on offense and made some nice passes,” McCleery said. “We held them pretty close on defense and had a lead.”

The third quarter started out promising enough. A Borba coast-to-coast drive to the bucket for two followed by a 3-pointer by teammate Cassie Coble lifted the Tigers to a 26-19 advantage out of the gate. The seven-point lead was Patterson’s largest of the game. It was also short-lived.

Hilmar’s Blake Lopes hit a 3-pointer of her own, which was followed by a Krystal Gaglio turnaround jump-shot in traffic, to quickly tie the game. Lopes added five more third-quarter points, taking advantage of a Patterson defensive lapse and swaying the lead in favor of her Yellowjackets, 34-30.

The Tigers would creep close, evening things up at one point, but would never see the lead again.
Lopes also stepped up big for her team in the waning minutes, sinking clutch shot after clutch shot. Every time the Tigers managed to find the bottom of the bucket, it seemed as if Hilmar had a demoralizing and immediate response. Fourth-quarter scoring opportunities seemed to weigh heavily in favor of the home team, which knew how to hit the important shots when called to do so.

Coble was fouled while attempting a 3-pointer with a little more than 30 seconds left to play. She hit two of her three free-throw shots, slicing the lead to 46-44. The next Hilmar possession sent forward Jessica Paine to the foul line, where she knocked down one of two free throws. Paine’s miss allowed Patterson at least one more chance with the ball, down only three, with 22.2 seconds left in the game.

The Tigers subsequent game tying 3-point attempt clanked off the front iron and careened directly into the hands of Hilmar’s Courtney Ramos, sealing the victory for the Yellowjackets.

“We had our chances to win at the end, but we couldn’t execute,” McCleery said, “we couldn’t run our plays correctly, and if you do that at this level, then it’s pretty hard to win.”
