Taking Care of Business

Melody and Jason Verhoef took over Harley’s Grub Shack from Laurie and Robert Torres on Nov. 1 after moving to Patterson from Southern California.

Melody Verhoef said the menu at the downtown restaurant is the same as the Torreses had before, with Philly, hot dog and hamburger combos. All combos include a soft drink and fries.

So far, Verhoef said she has been happy with the response of Patterson residents to the family-owned business.

“Business has been really good,” Verhoef said. “We’re thinking of opening for breakfast and delivering meals as well.”

Breakfast selections would include dishes such as pancakes, scrambled eggs, omelets, bagels and bagel sandwiches.

The Verhoefs moved to Patterson in 2007 after Melody’s mother and brother bought houses in town.

They say they like the area and the locals they have met so far.

“It’s a nice community,” Verhoef said. “And it has fresh air — better than Southern California.”

Harley’s Grub Shack, 31 S. Third St., is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. six days a week. The restaurant is closed Sundays.

The Verhoefs also have another business, Santa Ana based-Trilogy Insurance Brokers Inc. The insurance company offers medical, dental, short-term and long-term disability, basic life, accidental death and dismemberment coverage, along with health savings accounts and voluntary products.

Insurance is available for both individuals and large groups.

Student wins computer for his school
The nine La Perla Tapatia stores in Stanislaus County recently had a contest in conjunction with Coca-Cola, and a local student won the big prize.

Oscar Noe Rodriguez, a 12-year-old seventh-grader from Creekside Middle School, won a $500 gift card from Best Buy for a computer for Creekside.
“We’re very thankful for La Perla and Coca-Cola for sponsoring this contest and to Oscar for entering Creekside Middle School,” Creekside Principal Shawn Posey said.

Oscar, the son of Rosa Alanis, had his name drawn from the entries put in Coca-Cola boxes at La Perla stores.

He was also awarded an iPod Nano and a $150 gift certificate for his family to purchase whatever they want at La Perla Tapatia. Oscar received his prize at the school the morning of Dec. 7.

La Perla Tapatia has two locations in Patterson, 201 S. El Circulo and 131 E. Las Palmas Ave. It started business in town in the early 1980s with the Las Palmas Avenue store.

In other news, Veronica Novoa, special projects coordinator for La Perla Tapatia stores, said the business has started taking Women Infant and Children program vouchers. WIC is a federally funded supplemental food program that helps pregnant and postpartum women, infants and children younger than 5 eat well and stay healthy.
