At least two men were arrested by an auto theft task force Tuesday afternoon following a high-speed chase through the West Side and Turlock. A vehicle driven by suspected car thieves reached speeds of 100 mph as it zipped down West Main Street in Patterson while law enforcement vehicles trailed behind, according to dispatch reports. “They went by so fast, I was like, ‘Wow, they’re really moving,’” said east Patterson resident Joe Solis, who watched the chase from his home. Officials with the Turlock Police Department and the Stanislaus County Auto Theft Task Force did not return repeated calls seeking comment Tuesday. StanCATT, which started the pursuit, is a group of various local law enforcement agencies that focuses on auto theft investigations. Solis said he noticed at least five or six law enforcement vehicles zip by, spaced at 30 to 40 second intervals. Deputies at Patterson Police Services said they had heard police radio reports of the chase beginning in rural Newman. A dispatcher overheard on a police scanner noted the chase going through Patterson about 3:50 p.m. At one point, the suspect was passing people traveling about 90 mph to 100 mph on West Main Street as the car headed toward Turlock, the dispatcher said. Police finally caught up to the suspects in Turlock, where the men were arrested, according to reports heard on the scanner.
