25 years ago — Jan. 13, 1983 The Patterson City Council is expected to pass an ordinance that will prohibit bicyclists from riding on public sidewalks or carrying passengers. Gloria Lindner has been appointed chairwoman of the 1983 Apricot Fiesta. Heavy weekend rain prompted flood warnings as water roared down Salado Creek and threatened homes in the Barros Avenue area. High school students, inmates and other volunteers, as well as city workers, sandbagged the soggy creek banks Monday. As much as two more inches of rainfall is expected throughout the week. 50 years ago — Jan. 9, 1958 Ruby Sierra, 21-year-old daughter of Eleuteria Sierra of Patterson, has entered the Sisters of the Holy Family Motherhouse convent in San Francisco. Don Dryden Jr. will be installed as president of the 20-30 Club. Larry Butler and Darryl Dennis were Patterson High’s only winners in a wrestling meet with Sonora. 75 years ago — Jan. 13, 1933 Faced with a possible deficit of $2,300 caused by unpaid property taxes, the City Council this week slashed salaries, department appropriations and other costs. The city’s budget for the fiscal year was cut from $7,452 to $5,109. The salary of police Chief Carl Lindgren was reduced to $100 a month. He also maintains the fire station and serves as Patterson’s health officer. The federal government this week passed a farm recovery bill that fixes the price of butter at 26 cents a pound.
