25 years ago – Aug. 19, 1982
Paul Friedrich’s family is hosting AFS student Christophe Billet of France for the coming school year.

Vandalism in the city’s park on the east side of Patterson has caused the City Council to direct a study of what can be done. The concession stand, electrical box and restrooms recently were vandalized more than once.

No action has been taken on a proposal by the Greyhound Bus Line to discontinue service from Vernalis to Los Banos.

Betty Bondietti is the new deputy of District No. 19, YLI, after attending the group’s grand convention in Honolulu. Local YLI president Hermine Garcia also attended.


50 years ago – Aug. 15, 1957
The city has sold its city yard on South First Street for $2,000 to Swift & Co., which must construct a building on the site within 120 days or lose the property.

Barbara Serpa will reign as queen of this weekend’s St. Anthony celebration. Her attendants will be Carolyn Inaudi and Jo Ann Avila. Jack Stewart’s band will play for the celebration.

About $39,999 in federal funding has been allotted for installation of equipment to allow safer landings at the Crows Landing Auxiliary Naval Air Station.

Police Chief Alex Kosich has given a final warning to city dog owners to get their pets licensed.

75 years ago – Aug. 19, 1932
Southern Pacific is threatening to ask state permission to cancel daylight trains running on the West Side. It is claimed the trains are running at a loss.

No new clues are available in last week’s hanging death of an 11-year-old Patterson boy whose body was found nude in an orchard on the city’s east side. He had been missing for four days and it is not known if he took his own life, the death was accidental, or if he was murdered.
