"When I got out of my shot, I was able to reel him in and take him down." - Nathaniel Mayora PHS JV wrestler Patterson’s wrestlers gave Hilmar the red-mat treatment Wednesday night, out-muscling the visiting Yellowjackets to an impressive 48-22 win. ![]() Finish Him: Wrestling in the 130-pound class, Patterson’s Michael Lainez (top) tires Hilmar’s Michael Silva before winning the match by a pin during Wednesday’s home meet against the Yellowjackets. I think the effort was good,” Patterson coach Lee Scoles said. “There are places where we can still pick up our technique, but that will come from practice.” Patterson jumped out to an early 27-6 advantage but saw their lead slip away when the Yellowjackets won crucial 145-pound and 152-pound matches. The Hilmar threat could have been a momentum-changer, but it wasn’t. Patterson quickly responded with a pin from Adrian Ramirez in the 160-pound weight class. Ramirez’s individual win catapulted the Tigers to a 33-16 advantage. After winning their next three matches in succession, Patterson pulled away for good. “A lot of these wrestlers have a lot of experience and have probably been wrestling since their freshmen year,” Ramirez said. “I knew that my guy was going to try and come out physical, but I knew I had him. I decided in my head that I was going to pin him.” ![]() JUMBLED: Patterson varsity wrestler Patrick Simeon (bottom) gets tangled with his Hilmar opponent during Wednesday’s home meet. Things won’t get any easier for Patterson. After this weekend’s Lloyd C. Engel Tournament in Escalon, the Tigers will head to Livingston to square off with a rugged and ready Wolves team. Livingston is yet another step up in competition, Scoles said. “Whether or not we beat them, only time will tell,” Scoles said. “If we keep emphasizing effort, then good things will happen.” Junior varsity The Patterson JV team also came away with a win over Hilmar, defeating the Yellowjackets by a score of 66-6. Patterson’s Nathaniel Mayora spoke of his individual win. “When I got out of my shot, I was able to reel him in and take him down,” he said. “I had to keep him on the outsideusing my arm strength, break down his arms, get back up and pin him.” To reach Marc Aceves at the Irrigator, call 892-6187 or e-mail him at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
