At a glance
  • WHAT: City Council meeting
  • WHEN: 7 p.m. Tuesday
  • WHERE: Council Chambers, City Hall, 1 Plaza

Patterson City Council may approve a Walgreens store at Sperry and Ward avenues on Tuesday.

Developers hope the drug store will be the first tenant in what will turn into a major retail center. Documents submitted to the city by the developer indicate more than two dozen buildings, including one large enough for a big-box store.

Should the project win approval, it could become the third major retail center at Sperry and Ward avenues. A Longs Drugs store was recently built to the southwest, and there are plans for that to turn into a large retail area.

Approval would continue the trend of retail stores setting up shop outside Patterson’s downtown. However, the city charges fees on such projects that go toward downtown redevelopment.

In other council matters:
  • The council will consider how to move forward with the general plan revision process. Mayor Becky Campo asked that representatives not attend the most recent general plan meeting in December, leading to its cancellation. Now, city staff recommends that they reschedule that meeting, send the issue back to an advisory committee, or table the matter until it is more clear what the county plans for surrounding areas and whether a slow-growth measure will be passed.

  • The mayor will give her State of the City speech.

  • The council will consider reiterating Stanislaus County Council of Governments’ right to seize private property. StanCOG staff members believe they have the power to enact eminent domain; however, a property owner they are dealing with claims otherwise.

  • To avoid confusion, StanCOG has asked that its members — local governments throughout the county — adopt new language in a Joint Powers Agreement that spells out clearly that StanCOG can take people’s property using eminent domain.

  • The council will consider how to pay for a skate park and when to build it. The city’s skate park focus group estimated the park would cost about $450,000, but the source of that money has not been determined.
