NEWMAN — Patterson’s grapplers handily defeated host Orestimba on Friday, opening this year’s league play with convincing victories at both the varsity and junior varsity levels. The Tigers began the night with a lopsided 60-3 JV win. The varsity team completed the sweep, dominating the Warriors, 64-12. Patterson’s Johnathon Johnson defeated tough girl wrestler Adrienne Hipke in the second individual match of the evening. The 115-pound match-up proved to be an important momentum builder for the Tigers. ![]() Grapple: After a hard-fought battle, junior varsity PHS wrestler Johnathon Johnson (top) rolls Orestimba High School’s Adrienne Hipke for the pin. The referee halted the action twice, breaking-up Rangel’s strangling grasp, and allowing the helpless Orestimba wrestler to regain his breath. Both stalls gave Rangel an insurmountable edge in points. He finished with a 20-3 advantage. “I wanted to go for the pin, but I found the cradle and the half nelson were working well against him,” Rangel said. “I was just happy to get the win for my team.” The Tigers’ Carlos Ramirez also stood out among the night’s most compelling victories. Ramirez closed out Jonathan Slater with a reverse half-lock maneuver, pinning him and quickly ending any long-shot hopes of an Orestimba comeback. Coach Lee Scoles spoke highly of his 215-pound wrestler. “Carlos is a nice kid, and that’s good, but it’s also good to see him enjoy some early success,” Scoles said. “He certainly deserves tonight’s win.” Other noteworthy performances came from Patterson’s 145-pound Ricky Howard, who pinned Orestimba’s Michael Galvin, and the Tigers’ 285-pound Alfredo Robles, who earned a pin over Chris Arroyo. ![]() Say Uncle: Patterson High varsity wrestler John Bingham pins Orestimba High’s Anna Marie Alvarez in the 130-pound division during Friday’s meet in Newman. This year’s team works to take on the persona of their veteran coach Scoles, who preaches that there is always room for improvement on any team. Scoles acknowledged the importance of the win, but was hesitant to relish in it. “We still need to slow down, work harder, continue to show up at practice and we need to pay attention,” Scoles said. Patterson’s next two league matches present the challenges of stronger, established teams, both of which expect to place well this season. Both Hilmar and Livingston will present more of a fight for this year’s Patterson squad, which consists largely of first-time grapplers. Meanwhile, the win over Orestimba is an important first step, Scoles said. “It’s always important to get the league opener with a win because it sets the tone for the season, both varsity and JV,” Scoles said. “It also lets the other teams in the league know that you are going to be a good team.” Patterson also placed seventh at Saturday’s Calaveras Invitational. The finish was four places higher than last year’s effort, and saw the Tigers’ take home five varsity medals. The JV team finished second overall and earned 11 medals of its own. Home team Calaveras received the overall victory, but Scoles was more than happy with his team’s 69.5-point outing. “Our program is on an upswing,” Scoles said. “We’ve seen more kids coming out and gaining experience this year. I think we’ll end up with about 55 wrestlers by the end of the season.” Patterson fans boasted the largest crowd in attendance, and according to Scoles, no one cheered louder. Varsity winners included Elias Pasillas at 112 pounds, Nelson Rangel at 125, Ricky Howard at 145, Adrian Ramirez at 160 and Brian Serpa at 189 pounds. Scoles also acknowledged the JV team, whose 11 medals included five first-place finishes. The tourney did not keep team scores for its JV portion. “Had there been a score kept, we’d have run away with it,” Scoles said.
