PHS girls hold off Central Catholic, dominate Gustine Print E-mail

Three-point shooting eventually helped the Patterson girls basketball team nail down a closely contested

53-42 win over visiting Central Catholic Saturday. The Tigers struggled from the free-throw line in the first half, but managed to find their rhythm and their touch from behind the arc.

Several missed free throws threatened to haunt the Patterson girls at the outset of the first quarter. The Tigers failed to capitalize on a series of opportunities from the charity stripe, allowing the Raiders to stay close and keep the first quarter score to a stagnant 12-9 Patterson lead.

Central Catholic kept things competitive, but never managed to take the lead largely because of the Tigers’ strong defense. Patterson went into the intermission ahead 28-22.

The Tigers’ Michelle Bancroft returned from the break by stroking two 3s. Her back-to-back 3-pointers put the Tigers up 34-23 and gave Patterson its first double-digit lead of the game.

“They were catching up to us, and I was a little worried,” Bancroft said. “We played hard, didn’t let them come back, and I knew we’d get the win.”

Cassie Coble netted yet another Tigers 3-ball from the corner. Coble’s shot came courtesy of a set inbounds play that worked on more than one occasion for the Tigers.

Patterson coach Jason McCleery spoke about the proper execution of his inbounds plays.

“The girls executed the inbounds plays and offensive set really good tonight,” McCleery said.

Bancroft hit her third 3-pointer just before the end of the third quarter putting the Tigers ahead 45-35.

With the lead intact and the Raiders’ offense struggling, Patterson locked down one final time on defense and secured the win.

Coble finished the game with 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, while Bancroft added nine points, two rebounds and three steals.

McCleery expected the Raiders to play hard and acknowledged the impact of his team’s outside play.

“Central Catholic shoots the ball really well, so we knew they were going to be able to score,” McCleery said. “In the second half, our offense started to click, and Michelle hit some big shots for us.

It was good shooting that made all the difference.”

It was evident that Patterson would have its way with league rival Gustine from the opening tip of Monday’s game. The Tigers dominated on both sides of the ball, outscoring, out-hustling and out-coaching the visiting Redskins to a 59-22 win.

If this were a heavyweight fight, the referee would have stopped the bout early in the first round.

Unfortunately for Gustine, they were in it for the long haul, and Patterson never showed any signs of letting up.

Patterson jumped out to a 16-2 lead in the game’s opening minutes. In contrast to their previous game against Central Catholic, the Tigers took advantage of their trips to the foul line, capitalizing on seven first-quarter Gustine fouls. Scoring came from all directions, with forward Shelby Yamamoto unmercifully ending the first quarter with a rebound putback to push the lead to 24-3.

The Tigers emptied their bench early and often. A carousel of lineups assured that every Patterson player would make an appearance, and against a porous Gustine defense, find the bottom of the net as well.

Patterson coach Jason McCleery was well pleased with his group’s effort.

“I think every coach would agree that that’s what you strive for,” McCleery said. “We don’t have a short bench, and everyone got in, everyone contributed and everyone scored. I go home tonight, and I’m happy.”

Patterson brandished a 32-11 halftime score and was able to run set plays designed to get everyone involved offensively. Lindsey Moeller got the third quarter started with an 8-foot jumper in the lane extending the Gustine deficit to 22.

Frustration inevitably set in. Gustine was forced into fouling Patterson players in hopes of curbing the scoring onslaught. Guard Brooke Borba took a hard but clean check into the padded walls of the gymnasium, crashing to the floor with an unnerving thud. She got up slowly and attempted two free throws. Soon after, the Tigers’ Mary Mojica drilled home three of her team high 14 points, keeping the lead where it was and proving that the rougher physical play of the Redskins would do little to stop the rout.

Any questions or doubts about the Tigers’ intensity during a blowout were quickly squashed by sophomore forward Cassie Coble.

“We don’t lose focus, we just play our game the way we always do, and try not to drop down to their level and play hard,” she said.

Coach McCleery was equally impressed with his team’s defensive performance.

“We had a definite speed advantage tonight, which allowed us to set up our press,” McCleery said.

“It’s a definite credit to how hard the girls are working at practice, and I give them all of the credit.”

The Patterson JV girls fell just short of victory to Central Catholic, 49-44. The Tigers managed to claw within four points of what had once been a 21-point Raiders’ lead. Patterson’s Amber Bond finished the game with 16 points.

The Patterson JV girls also rolled over Gustine to a final score of 71-40. Tigers Amber Bond and Kianna Weinzheimer each put up solid numbers, scoring 18 and
16 points respectively.

Coach Terry Coble spoke highly of the girls’ play.

“They get their points from a lot of defensive skills,” Coble said. “They’re in-your-face players who anticipate very well.”
