PHS basketball player headed for standout career

Patterson High basketball player Cassie Coble’s off-season basketball itinerary underscored her commitment to going the extra mile in more ways than one.

As a member of the Modesto Magic girls travel basketball club, the 6-foot-1 guard/
forward traveled to University of the Pacific, Stanford University and University of California,  Berkeley, and to out-of-state venues like Portland, Ore., and Seattle, for tournaments.

It’s a commitment Coble has made going on three years now, just another reason why she started in at least six games during her freshmen season last year.

This season, she’s coming into her own even more as Patterson’s leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 10.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game in a starting role. Coble’s game has improved by leaps and bounds this season, positioning her to be one of Patterson’s best girls basketball players in years, her coach said.

“She has the potential to be one of the top players to ever come out of Patterson,” Patterson coach Jason McCleery said. “I’ve seen a big improvement in her ball handling and her shooting. She’s been able to get to the rim and finish, or get rebounds.”

Her travel ball experience has even drawn interest from two colleges, Oregon State and The Master’s College. Both have sent letters to Coble expressing preliminary interest.

“With travel ball, you get seen a lot,” Coble said. “You get seen by a whole bunch of colleges. They went to all the Seattle and Portland games, unlike high school games where you might not have one college coach to watch you.”

Coble’s Modesto Magic squad was coached by Modesto Christian girls basketball coach Robb Spencer. Last season, Spencer’s team finished 27-6 overall as the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V champions.

“Coach Spencer is a big defensive coach,” Coble said. “… I worked on everything over the summer with Robb and Jason (McCleery) to make me better because I wanted to.”

When she was younger, Coble gained a hunger for basketball by watching her dad, Terry Coble, play the sport.

“My dad has been my idol through it all,” she said. “He played all through high school. When I was little, I’d watch him go play. I just loved watching him play. He had me play recreation. He was my coach since first grade until eighth grade.”

Terry Coble coached the freshman girls squad during Coble’s first varsity campaign, but has since joined McCleery as an assistant coach.

With most players, coaches usually get just two seasons before seeing them mature and graduate, leaving coaches to usher in new talent. In Coble’s case, McCleery has her for two more seasons in the hopes that she’ll grow and develop her skill set.

“It’s definitely a luxury as a coach to have a player of Cassie’s caliber,” McCleery said. “The big thing is that I want to help her develop all phases of her game, like her shot and her defense.”

If she stays healthy and continues to grow as a basketball player, McCleery said he envisions Coble’s name in the annals of Patterson High’s record books.

“If she stays healthy, I see no reason why she won’t be among the top two to three players ever to come out of Patterson,” McCleery said. “We’ve had some great ones like Gail Dennis and Amy Castillo. If she’s healthy, she may even be a Division I player.”
