25 years ago — Jan. 6, 1983 The first baby born at Del Puerto Hospital in the New Year was Brittany Martin, the first child of Bertha and Stephen Martin of Crows Landing. Dr. Michael Schorr was the attending physician. Patterson police officer Joe Camarda has a new partner when he patrols the streets: Samson, a 16-month-old German shepherd. Patterson’s public works director was badly burned and transferred by helicopter to a Stockton hospital after the carburetor of his car backfired as he was pouring gasoline into it. The local police department is about to start a new Police Cadet Explorer Scout program. Officer Jack Price will be in charge. 50 years ago — Jan. 2, 1958 The Patterson Pomo Bowmen are planning an indoor archery tournament later this month. Deloris Morgan is the newly elected president of the group. She and husband Ray were named the outstanding archers of the past year. The Patterson Rifle Club hosted a BB gun shoot, with Keith McCune scoring 74 out of a possible 75. Among the 42 shooters, Bill Harrison and Robert Crone each scored 72, Larry Mancebo 71 and Philip Alves 68. The Lions Club is seeking entries in its 10th annual March of Dimes variety show, which will be next month. Jim Covello is chairing the event, assisted by Bill Clement and Harold Manley. 75 years ago — Jan. 6, 1933 Due primarily to a heavy slump in holiday business, the Patterson Post Office skidded out of the second-class rating and began the year as a third-class office. Proceeds in 1931 barely topped $8,000, the dividing line, but slipped this past year to $6,523. Unemployed workers in Stanislaus County have been improving the Del Puerto Canyon road and have progressed about five miles from the mouth of the canyon. About 50 men are expected this week to improve the roadway up toward the mines. Workers are being paid in credits for merchandise at the rate of 25 cents an hour. Ketchup was selling for 10 cents per 14-ounce bottle at the New Witten Market. Irrigator archives.
