Three die in flaming crash Print E-mail

Three people died in a two-car collision east of Grayson on Thursday after the Toyota Camry they were riding in burst into flames.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating whether drugs were involved in the 5:17 p.m. crash, though it is impossible to know whether there were any drugs in the vehicle itself. Results of a toxicology test are pending.

“The car was torched,” said officer D. Crooker of the California Highway Patrol. “Anything that was in the car was vaporized.”

A Patterson resident who witnessed the accident pulled a couple of passengers to safety, saving their lives, according to a CHP report.

Burris Fisher, 21, of Ogden, Utah, the driver of the 1993 Camry, was arrested on charges of manslaughter.

Fisher was driving the Camry westbound on Grayson Road, west of Laird Road, at an undetermined speed when his car crossed into the eastbound lane and struck a 1999 Honda Accord, driven by 40-year-old Delhi resident Jose Barahoma.

The Honda was traveling at about 55 to 60 mph, according to the CHP.

An engine fire started in the Toyota after it came to rest on its right side in the eastbound lane. That’s when witness David Gillespie of Patterson and three unknown others who arrived after the accident pushed the Camry back onto its wheels, according to the CHP. Gillespie broke the window of the Camry and rescued Fisher and left-rear passenger Walter Holcher, 32, of Ceres.

After that, the fire was too intense, and the other three passengers could not be saved.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department’s coroner’s division did not have the names or ages of the three people who died as of press time. All three were men, and Crooker said he believed they were from Stanislaus and Merced counties.

Crooker said one of the people who died appeared to have head trauma, while the other two had obvious burns.

Holcher and Barahoma were both taken to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto with major injuries.
In addition to being arrested, Fisher was transported to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto with major injuries.

Though the CHP is investigating whether drugs were involved in the accident, Crooker said alcohol did not play a role in the crash.
