Patterson teen shot outside party Print E-mail

An 18-year-old Patterson man died Saturday night following a shooting at a quinceañera in Crows Landing.

Someone shot Emmanuel Marino several times at Crows Landing Pentecost Hall, at Fourth and G streets, said a spokesman for the Stanislaus County Sheriff. Police have made no arrests.
About 200 people were at the party at the time of the shooting. After interviewing close to 100 people, investigators believe they have several strong leads, spokesman Royjindar Singh said.
Police received reports of a large fight with shots fired in Crows Landing at about 9:30 p.m. Deputies found bullet shells and blood when they arrived at the scene. Several people had already taken Marino from the party and tried to get him to a hospital.
They got as far as Patterson before they pulled into a gas station at Highway 33 and Sperry Avenue and flagged down a deputy.
Witnesses describe a bloody scene.
“A guy jumps out of the car saying, ‘He’s been shot, he’s been shot,’” said Patterson-area resident Dave Santos, who was at the gas station. “There was a body on the pavement, half in the car, half out.”
Marino remained motionless, Santos said.

When Division Chief Jeff Gregory of the Patterson Fire Department arrived, he said deputies were performing CPR on Marino.

“Our local deputies did an excellent job at doing everything they could to save this boy,” Gregory said.
Marino did not respond to the CPR, he said.

An ambulance took Marino to Emmanuel Medical Center in Turlock, where he was pronounced dead.
Marino recently graduated from Del Puerto High School in Patterson. He had worked at Mountain Mike’s Pizza for the past two years, where his boss and a co-worker described him as considerate and an excellent worker. He had recently given his notice and planned to start working at the Kohl’s distribution center in Patterson, they said.

A family member at Marino’s Patterson home declined to talk to a reporter.

Singh said there is no evidence that the incident is gang-related, but Patterson Police Chief Tyrone Spencer said Marino was known to be in a gang. Police document gang members and present that information to the courts if that person is charged with crimes. Spencer said a Patterson detective had documented Marino as a gang member, but he could not release specifics about his file.

The killing happened the same weekend the sheriff’s department brought in extra law enforcement agents to calm tensions between rival gangs. An increase in gang graffiti and vandalism to several cars led police to suspect that the Norteños and Sureños had been feuding.

Patterson police used the extra manpower Friday to make additional warrant arrests and conduct searches of people on parole or probation.

“Even though you try your best to get kids to stop killing each other, it still happens,” Spencer said.
