Career center will open on PHS campus Print E-mail

Patterson High School’s first College and Career Center will open Jan. 9, giving students a step up on searching for careers and getting college information.

The center will be on the PHS campus, 200 N. Seventh St., in the student services offices that once served as the school’s main entrance and housed the principal and assistant principal.

Dianne Vargas, guidance learning coordinator at PHS, said the room was stripped down to concrete and new paint and a floor were added.

The center, which has seven student computers and a computer for the teacher, will have information available for students after school and during lunch.

Students can do an intensive career assessment on a special computer program, which has a “day in the life” video that shows clips of the fastest-growing careers. The center also has access to Internet-based resources that allow students to go online to see what courses they should take for any given profession.
Vargas said the school is planning a “road show” to present careers in manufacturing on Jan. 23. The event will offer insights into manufacturing jobs in the region.

Other career opportunities for Patterson High students are being developed and will be announced later next year, Vargas said.

“On the college end, students can come in and look up the college classes,” Vargas said. “And they can use the computers to file for financial aid. Also, a lot of our students need help with their college application as well.”

Vargas said the office will be helpful for school counselors, who can go online and get applications. It also will help colleges that require electronic versions of students’ transcripts.

PHS seniors can look up careers that interest them and create their career portfolio before completing Patterson Required Exit Program projects required for graduation.

Vargas said students will benefit whether they continue with education after high school or enter the workforce.

“They have a place now where they can come and get college and career information centrally located within the College and Career Center,” she said.
