25 years ago — Dec. 23, 1982
One of Patterson’s oldest businesses, E.L. Fink & Son, will soon close its doors. Founded in 1916, it was purchased in the early 1950s by Arthur Stangeland from his father-in-law, E.L. Fink.
Patterson’s new wastewater treatment facility near the San Joaquin River has received the Plant of the Year award from the district California Water Pollution Control Association, which has some 115 members. Ignacio Lopez manages the city’s plant.
Ed Torrison admits he had a close call. His dump truck rolled off a San Joaquin River levee into 35 feet of water as he was helping repair a flood-damaged levee in the Vernalis area. Torrison escaped through an open window.

50 years ago — Dec. 19, 1957
Patterson’s new federal low-rent housing project on Walnut Avenue is expected to be ready for occupancy by Jan. 15.
Santa Claus will be calling local homes in the evening Sunday and Monday. Those with young children may schedule the visits by calling Paul Snider or Al Wesson.
Gerald Bean has been elected worshipful master of the Patterson Masonic Lodge. Ray Murphy will serve as senior warden and Richard Ayres as junior warden.
Girl Scout Troop 35 has distributed food baskets to needy families in the Patterson area. Working on the project were Carolyn Wheeland, Jo Anne McGee, Nancy Arambel, Stacey Stanley, Gloria Moore, Alice Hooper and Rani Goutiere.

75 years ago — Dec. 23, 1932
Rain throughout the week gave Patterson an early Christmas present. The recorded total was .91 of an inch.
Because of the wet weather, the county’s unemployment relief program cut short its effort at improving the Del Puerto Canyon road. About 15 workers put in part of a day Wednesday.
Old St. Nick will be arriving tonight at Plaza Park in the heart of downtown Patterson, where he is expected to be greeted by 700 local youngsters and the majority of the community.
Christmas day on Sunday will begin with a midnight Mass at Sacred Heart Church, celebrated by Father J.A. Martins. The Mission Church congregation will assemble at 5 a.m. for a Christmas service directed by the Rev. C.A. Hedlind, and an hour later, the Lutheran Church will have an early-morning song service with a sermon by the Rev. H.J. Thorpe.
E.L. Fink has purchased an interest in the New Patterson Theater, a business enterprise recently launched by Richard Bare of Modesto.
