Hey you!
You, the one clutching a ream-sized holiday to-do list with a crazed, bewildered look in your eyes.

I know that look — it’s enough to make a person wish for an IV of Valium. I feel your anxiety and would just like to say that, even though you probably doubt it, you will make it through the holidays alive.
So put down your list, have a cup of tea and take a few deep, calming breaths.

It seems the holidays can create more stressful situations than there are ways to decorate a gingerbread house. Folks pile on more obligations and tasks than they can possibly complete, all while worrying about whether their table setting matches the one they saw on Martha Stewart. I am fairly certain Martha Stewart does not do all of her own holiday preparations, and she definitely did not do them in prison — a place where a shiny ornament hook probably qualifies as a weapon.

All this holiday stress can fester like a bad fruitcake, making it hard to enjoy the season. The holidays are meant for family and friends, not for getting one’s blood pressure medication increased.

So, to combat this stress, I am issuing a challenge:

Scratch one or two of the items off your lengthy to-do list.

Before you yelp in horror at my suggestion, remember this: It’s not necessary to serve four different desserts at your holiday party. Your children will survive without having their mountain of presents meticulously wrapped and beribboned. And the decorations in your front yard do not have to rival those of the Griswold family in “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.”

Ten years down the road, you won’t remember the way your napkins were folded or if you used the right color ink on your holiday cards. Instead, you’ll remember the joy and laughter you shared with your loved ones. It’s those special moments that count. Let yourself enjoy the simple things, and everything else will work itself out.

Now I leave you to your preparations. Have a wonderful holiday, free of Valium, Martha Stewart and festering fruitcake.

And burn that to-do list while you’re at it.
