City to weigh land purchase for water treatment plant Print E-mail

The city of Patterson might be on the verge of buying land for a water treatment facility.

At Tuesday’s regular meeting, Patterson City Council will consider approving the final purchase offer for several parcels on Orange Avenue.

Typically, a report from city employees would accompany the announcement of such a purchase.

However, all the city has published on this matter is a document stating it will be discussed in open session if it is approved earlier in closed session.

The only property negotiations scheduled for closed session have to do with a water treatment plant.

By state law, the council must conduct business during meetings with agendas that are open to the public for almost all matters. But for property and labor negotiations, they can conduct meetings in private.

A similar item appeared on the previous meeting’s agenda, but the item was never acted on in open session.

The council has been working on getting a water treatment facility for close to two years, following a report from the city’s water consultants that said the city would likely need to treat its drinking water in the future. Consultants estimated it would cost close to $100 million to get the facility up and running.

In other council matters
  • The council will consider choosing a firm to help replace the water pipes in the older parts of town. While the lowest bid came from GDR Engineering, which has done engineering work for several projects in Patterson, city employees are recommending the H20 Group, the council’s water consultants. H20 Group bid $611,825 and GDR bid $490,315. Staff is recommending taking the higher bid because H20 offered more services, a report states.
  • The council will consider accepting a new contract with the firefighters union.
  • The council will consider teaming up with the Yosemite Community College District and Stanislaus County to build a new library in Patterson that could also be the start of a West Side campus.
